* ARE ARTIFICIAL COSMETIC COLORS DANGEROUS?
Yes! Artificial coloring is NOT harmless! Many studies have been conducted and have found that some of the physical side effects of artificial colorants are: rashes, asthma, tumors, hyperactive disorders (rainbow cereal, anyone?), and the inability to concentrate. These effects can be compounded when we are coming into contact with these artificial colorants multiple times a day... from breakfast cereal, to our juice, to our shampoo, to our soaps, to our PB&J sandwhich ingredients, to our lotion, to our lipstick, to... you get the picture! |
* WHAT ABOUT PRODUCTS LABELED AS "MINERAL MAKEUP"? ARE THEY PURE?
Unfortunately, most products on the market labeled as 'mineral makeup' consist of mineral colorants that have been adulterated with artificial dyes and are NOT at all 100% pure! Many mica mineral pigments used in cosmetics are mixed with Lakes (Red #40, etc..) or dyes and yet companies still market and sell these products as all-natural mineral makeup. This is very unfair to the consumer who is purchasing these products and putting their trust in these companies to accurately and honestly list the origins of the ingredients used. Not only is using tainted colorants an ethical problem with these companies, but MOST of them still fill their products with all the same 'junk' ingredients you'd find in less expensive brands.
One of the most dangerous ingredients found in mineral makeup products is called bismuth oxychloride. This ingredient is a known skin irritant and is essentially toxic (far from natural). Bismuth oxychloride is a by-product of LEAD and copper refining and is chlorinated as it is processed to be used in cosmetics (used for giving cosmetics a creamy feeling and glow). Many times it is listed as the 1st or 2nd ingredient in mineral makeup, increasing the probability of worsening skin conditions. Other dangerous ingredients such as petroleum derivatives (propylene glycol, petrolatum, etc.), mineral oil, parabens (dangerous preservatives), and talc can also easily still be found in products labeled as mineral makeup. The only way for a consumer to know whether their purchased product is actually made with pure mica minerals or pure iron oxides is to either contact the company and request this information or to buy from trustworthy cosmetic lines that honestly disclose their ingredients entirely.

* WHAT ARE THE COLORANTS USED BY INNOCENCE BODY CARE?
Innocence Body Care is committed to using only 100% pure mineral colorants, UNTAINTED by FD&C colors! I have researched many colorant options and have very high standards of purity for my customers. Why present my customers with bath salts that aid in the restoring of your skin, if it is also laced with toxic artificial colors that you will soak in? Why create a lotion which is suppost to supply vitamins to your thirsty skin, if it is also artificially (and dangerously) dyed yellow to make it simply look more "pretty" in the bottle? I research out natural colorant options with joy and commit to using only herbs, pure micas and iron oxides for coloring my products.
* WHAT EXACTLY ARE MICA MINERALS AND IRON OXIDES? HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
MICA: The mica minerals I use are cosmetic grade and are even lip-safe. Mica minerals have literally been used since ancient times for the same reason we use it today! It is mined and used for commercial purposes, cosmetics and can even be found in some toothpastes! Cosmetic grade mica minerals have been purified to be safe for the body.
IRON OXIDES: The iron oxides I use have been filtered of harmful impurities and are body-safe. Iron oxides are naturally ocurring mineral deposits and these compounds are used as pigments in a variety of applications.
